The 1972 Porsche Design Chronograph 1 is regarded as one of the greatest racing chronographs. It may not be as revered by the mainstream as a Speedmaster or Daytona, but it's certainly a niche icon. This time around, however, I'll be spending more time looking closely at the regular production model of the watch. History of the Porsche Design Chronograph 1
The Chronograph 1 was one of Ferdinand Alexander Porsche's first designs after leaving the Porsche Car Company. He founded Porsche Design in 1972 and designed the Chronograph 1 in the same year. Fast forward to today. The current version of the Chronograph 1 looks familiar—maybe a little strange. Porsche Design recognized the timeless qualities of the design and decided not to destroy it. I can only applaud, not out of any sentimentality, but because I don't see the situation getting any better. No changes are needed to feel modern. However, some content has been updated. First, the case and bracelet are now made of titanium. Carbide coating is more durable and adds some new features. For example, you can now get push-button quick-release bracelets and tool-free micro-adjustment clasps. You also get a very respectable 100m waterproof rating.

Inside is the Porsche Design Werk 01.140. The movement is a joint effort between Porsche Design and Concepto. The basic architecture is derived from the Valjoux 7750, but the hairspring, escapement, winding mechanism and regulating mechanism are all new. The movement is regulated and certified as a chronometer by the Swiss Official Chronometer Certification (COSC).

Let's put down our watches for a moment and look at cars. We put the Chronograph 1 into a current 992 generation Guards Red 911 Carrera T. The T is a driver-focused version of the 911. While it has the same engine and power as the base 911, it's a bit lighter. The rear seats have been removed and the windows are thinner. This version also comes standard with a seven-speed manual gearbox. Guards Red perfectly matches the central chronograph hands of the Chronograph 1 and stands out on Dutch roads.

There's 385 horsepower on tap at the rear wheels, and it feels easier to handle than the GTS I drove in Austria. Acceleration is still quick, but less dramatic. Still, there's plenty of power and speed to be found at all times. Whether darting out of tight corners or overtaking on the motorway, this car has plenty of charm. There really isn't any legitimate reason to want more. Except, as you hurtle forward in the 480 HP GTS, you'll feel an exhilarating shot of pure terror. We just didn't grow up, did we?

I'll admit I'm a 911 addict. I love the styling, including that of the current 992 generation. The solid road feel and precise steering are stunning. No matter how hard I cornered it, it seemed to respond gently and politely: "We can go faster if you want." The only thing I would change about it is the transmission. I'll get criticized for this, but I'm not a manual purist by any means, and seven gears is at least one more. I would specify PDK. After driving both the T and the GTS, I think I'd split the difference and go with the Carrera S. luxury replica watches

Maybe the following is just imagination because I know the history, but watches and cars really go together like ham and cheese. Of course, I specifically requested a red or black car to match the watch in the photo. At that point, some aesthetic overlap was to be expected.

But it's much more than that. The design concepts of the two have something in common. This makes sense since they are all descendants of one person's original design. However, it's hard to pinpoint exactly what ties them together. This may be some kind of functional subtlety. For luxury goods, both the 911 and the Chronograph 1 have very little frills or frivolity. They all have a rational and somewhat Spartan aesthetic focus.

The Chronograph 1 would look out of place in a Ferrari or Lamborghini. There is too little plot. If people feel like this car and watch combination lacks a certain joie de vivre, I totally understand. But to me, that's what makes both so attractive. Wearing the Porsche Design Chronograph 1
After wearing the Porsche Design Chronograph 1 on my wrist for a while, I found it increasingly fascinating to me. I find it beautiful as an object and I like all its dimensions except its height. It's a little over 14mm tall, but I'm not happy with the way it distributes the height. The distance from the bottom of the case back to the bottom of the strap in the middle of the case is a whopping 5mm. This means it looks like it's floating above your wrist. It feels like there are two layers of nylon straps stuffed underneath. This is one of several reasons why I prefer chronographs with hand-wound movements.

Apart from that, it has the perfect sports watch look. The 40.8mm diameter paired with the unique hooded lug case is just right. The complex dial is relatively small and sits within a wide tachymeter modification. Nonetheless, it's very well sequenced on a visual level and therefore very clear.

The bracelet is equally well made. It's held together with single-sided screws, which is my favorite method in the long run. Fine-tuning is convenient, although not the smoothest-feeling option on the market. I do like how it sits in a very small single sided folding clasp. Unfortunately, the quick release mechanism isn't that great. It is a very convenient and user-friendly system in itself. But to facilitate it, the end links must be expanded. Paired with the tall case back, this means there's always a sizable gap between the watch and your wrist. Older versions without the quick release can hang directly under the hooded lugs, which provides a better fit. Sometimes, as is evident here, more features don't mean a better watch.

I don't think it's surprising that I had a great time driving a Carrera T and wearing a Chronograph 1. However, I was surprised by how well the two came together. The shared DNA is striking in many ways. The watch itself is also impressive. I find it extremely attractive in all its spartan glory. Interestingly, this is one of those rare occasions where nearly the entire Fratello office agrees.

Cars and watches have one more thing in common. They're all - how should I put it? ——Does not fully cater to value seekers. If it's horsepower you're after, you might end up with a Corvette, or maybe even a BMW M3 if you like German cars. Likewise, you can find a well-specified, well-made racing chronograph for less. I think it's a bit exaggerated that Porsche Design is priced significantly higher than the Moonwatch.

But, then again, it's just like cars. If you want a Porsche, you choose a Porsche. This applies to me too. I will probably never spend a fortune on a car. But if I did, I would choose 911. You can show me better value options, but I won't care. The Porsche Design Chronograph 1 is much the same. If you're going to do a comparison in an Excel spreadsheet of racing chronographs, you're not the target audience. Me too? Well, I'll probably add one to my order when I specify my dream Carrera S!
